How to Play Tile Rummy

Do you love to play tile games? Add tile rummy to your next game night!

Many mahjong companies are adding tile rummy sets to their lineups. I own sets from both The Mahjong Line and Oh My Mahjong, and I love them both. Honestly, I’ve been keeping the mahjong tiles tucked away because my family keeps reaching for tile rummy instead. Use this quick-start guide and see why we love playing rummy!

The goal of the game
Let’s start with how to win a game of tile rummy. The goal is to play all your tiles before your opponents do.
Tile rummy game setup
Tile rummy is played with 106 tiles and a rack for each player. As a social player who likes easy, casual games, I often play with 108 tiles, which adds two extra jokers (four jokers total).
Shuffle the tiles and place them face down on the game mat.
Each player picks 14 tiles at random and places them on their rack. The rest of the tiles stay face down on the mat.
Determine the first player
To choose who goes first, each player draws a tile from the mat. The player with the highest tile starts. Then place those tiles face down and mix them back into the pile.
Play moves clockwise (to the left).

How to play the tiles
To play your tiles, build groups (3–4 tiles of the same number, each a different color) or runs (3 or more consecutive numbers in the same color). Jokers can stand in for any tile in a group or a run.
To “get out” and start playing, your first play must add up to 30 or more points on the numbered tiles. After that first play, you can lay down any sets and rearrange the sets already on the mat to use more of your tiles.
At the end of your turn, every tile on the mat must belong to a group or a run.
What happens when you can’t play any tiles?
If you can’t play a tile, you draw one tile from the mat and add it to your rack, which ends your turn.
It’s not unusual to draw lots of tiles before you can “get out” with 30+ points. Sometimes you end up with more tiles than fit on your rack!
