Two years ago, I received the best parenting advice:

Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child.

I think about this every day. With all the controversy over the Black Dragon, I am sharing this advice as a little "game wisdom" for all players:

Prepare the player for the game, not the game for the player.

A smart and confident player can sit at any table. No matter the table rule or modern game pieces, a good player knows not only how to play, but how to adapt. A last-minute table rule doesn’t faze a good game player because they are flexible.

Missy Mahjong loves the rule books.
Read the rules... but know how to be flexible.

Think of golf. A good player can play in regular play or a scramble. Despite the weather conditions or the course design, a golfer can adjust to any conditions.

Each game player needs to know how to adapt. In American mahjong, the goal is to match 14 tiles to a hand on the card. A good player can play with any opponents, with any card, with any tiles and with any table rules.

I’m a game player. I listen to instructions. I adjust to any conditions. I am willing to try any new challenge. If I don’t know the particular game, I am a respectful student. I use both ears to listen and learn.

Good players ready for any game, in any conditions.

I didn’t sit down at the table to win… I sat down at the table to play.

Why are you at the game table?

A good teacher gives a student the building blocks they need to sit down at any table.

A good student listens and practices.

Can you play in any conditions?

Do you even know how to properly spell the game? Is it correct to spell the American version of the tile game mahjong or Mah-jongg? I know how to spell it. I'll share all my facts and secrets. Read more here...

The NMJL isn't the only game in town.
